Ballard Bike Shed

A view of the bike shed opened, showing the bicycle stored inside.

This bike shed designed to be an integrated and high-visible part of a front-yard garden in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. As site, as a zero-property line development, did not contain extra space for bike storage, this shed needed to be both visible and a feature of the front garden. It does this in several ways, by highlighting and following the structure of the main living room window in the house, by serving as a transition between the lower ground level and the higher floor level of the house, and by extending decorative elements within the house to the front garden.

In addition to providing locked bike storage that was easily accessible from the front gate, the shed also provides storage for gardening supplies, houses controls for landscape lighting and watering, and a counter and wetbar for gardening tasks. Beyond simply storing a bike, this shed provides a visual linchpin for the facade of the house.
